SCULPTURES
I started out as a minimalist sculptor, utilizing various materials, but over time, I began to lose interest. I wanted something more personal. Searching for a new direction led me to three-dimensional objects, opening the door for assemblage.
Objects combined in certain ways can become a narrative. The repurposing of found, or my own handmade objects, along with my lifelong enjoyment of games, of every description, was the combination I had been searching for.
The concept quickly developed into “The O’Halloran Intercontinental Export Gameworks Manufacturing Company,” the title of my first solo show. It was a fictitious business I invented. This conceptual exhibition of my non-functional game sculptures was held and performed at a Hilton Hotel Convention Center.
It was open to the public under the guise of a real company, and no art was mentioned at any time. Inside were my game sculptures and sales staff wearing my corporate logo. I was interviewed by a local TV reporter and advertised with promotional giveaways. It was a great success, encouraging me to dig deeper into viewer engagement.
I’m drawn to material things that generate feeling, thought, or action. I juxtapose these items to create associated experiences for the viewer. Today, my narrative sculptures are still telling stories.
